What is screencasting?

Screencasting is the action of recording the activity on a computer screen. Jing, CamStudio, and Screencast-O-Matic are popular free tools that offers basic screen capture and casting functionality. Jing and CamStudio are downloads, while Screencast-O-Matic is web-based and does not require a download.

Why do I care?

Often times an organization will need to capture all or parts of a computer screen for purposes of creating a training video or simply to share what they’ve seen on the computer. WIS uses screencasting often to prepare demos of using the catalog. Find yourself explaining the same online process over and over to different customers? Create a screencast, save it (or ask that it be posted somewhere on DPL's website), and next time just use that.

How do I get credit?

  1. Download and install, or sign up for an account with, one of the services above (if doing this on a work computer, you may need to contact DNS to acquire appropriate permissions)
  2. Using the service, record something you're doing on your computer (such as searching the catalog).
